**American**

Sourced primarily from the Eastern and Midwestern regions of North America, particularly states such as Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia, American white oak is drawn from a diverse forest range.

This diversity results in a broad color spectrum, from light golden tones to deeper browns, and often pink undertones. Naturally occurring mineral deposits can introduce darker streaking within the wood.

Known for its pronounced grain, naturally warm undertones, and great stability, American white oak is widely used across large formats and architectural applications. Achieving very pale or neutral finishes often requires additional finish development and control.

**European**

Since the mid-1990s, European white oak sourcing has expanded from Eastern Europe to forests across the continent, with imports steadily increasing over time. Some of the most renowned veneer-quality sources are found in places such as Tronçais in France, Spessart and Palatinate in Germany, and Croatia particularly loved for its old growth trees.

Typically harvested from older trees with larger diameters, European white oak reveals a finer and tighter grain, with a lighter beige-to-brown tonality, and often more pronounced medullary flecks when quarter-sawn. It often requires less staining and fewer finish layers to achieve the desired effect.

These characteristics give the material a refined, natural appearance that many designers favor for pale and organic interiors.

**Quarter Cut**

When exposed through quarter cutting, they create the distinctive flake or fleck patterns, especially prominent in oak species.

**Rift cut**

Tightest, most uniform grain, minimizes oak flake, most expensive due to waste, contemporary aesthetic.

**Flat cut**

Will give you beautiful cathedral grain.
patterns, most common and economical, dramatic figure, variations, typically book matched.

WHITE WASHING applies a diluted white pigment to the surface, softening the tone and slightly muting the grain while preserving a natural, lived-in character and offering more forgiveness with material variation.

BLEACHING, by contrast, chemically lightens the wood fibers themselves and therefore requires very high-quality, well-selected wood, as the process exposes any variation in grain. Because it acts at the fiber level, bleaching is more unforgiving and can develop subtle undertone shifts over time, such as warming, greying, or yellowing, depending on species, finish system and UV exposure. Proper testing, neutralization, and protective topcoats are essential to maintain a stable, refined result.

Across the projects we have the opportunity to realize, particularly second residences such as Aspen ski lodges or Californian mountain retreats, materials that feel authentic and lived in are popular.

***Wire brushing*** is one of the most effective ways to reveal the natural texture of wood.

At veneer thickness, the pieces pass through a brushing machine or are worked by hand. The process removes the softer growth rings of the wood.

The depth of the texture is not achieved by pressure against the surface, but by the number of passes. This is essential: increasing pressure alone would only cause the brushes to bend, leaving the surface unchanged.

Instead, the repeated brushing allows the grain to emerge naturally, enhancing relief and tactility without compromising the integrity of the veneer. *The result cannot be forced or fully controlled.*

Oak is a raw, natural material. Its beauty lies in the ability to take something simple and organic and transform it into enduring architecture.

A process defined at Classic Woodwork by precision and an uncompromising respect for the material.
